Dear Gina,

Thanks for your feedback on this work. We have begun discussions with students and administrators about the need for this kind of support/training in holding difficult/courageous conversations that can also extend outside of the classroom into advising interactions and program and department interactions for example.

We currently have some rich resources already available for classroom-based interactions. Our colleagues in the Teaching Engagement Program (Lee Rumbarger, Director) have developed a number of resources for engaging in and facilitating courageous conversations in the classroom context. I've copied their resource links here for your reference and I strongly encourage you to take some time to read them if they're new to you, and if they're familiar, take another look to re-familiarize yourself. It's time well-spent IMO...

Hi Elizabeth and all,
This resolution looks great. Strongly worded and important.

My one suggestion, which maybe doesn't affect the resolution at all, is that ALL faculty and GEs be required to have training in holding "courageous" or "difficult" conversations (the adjective depending on your lens). I personally feel so incredibly ill prepared to discuss these issues each time they arise and would like to feel less helpless and ineffective.

Elizabeth and Elliott, thank you, once again, for your leadership, especially in what has been an absurdly challenging year!

Subject: [Uosenateexec] Senate Resolution Against Racism and Systemic Oppression

Dear Members of the Senate Executive Committee,

I'm reaching out to you in this moment in time that I believe calls for strong leadership from the university senate. Incoming senate president Elliot Berkman and I have prepared this senate resolution against racism and systemic oppression (attached). The document has been crafted in consultation with numerous individuals from a variety of constituent groups on campus. We ask for your feedback and further invite you to consider co-sponsoring the motion to be introduced in our final senate meeting of the year. We hope to distribute the motion to the full senate Monday AM (6/8).

We realize that this request and action is coming at a busy time for all of you, at a time when you must be exhausted, worried, and struggling with a mix of feelings. Thanks for taking time for this and please reach out to me at any time if you want to speak further and share your thoughts, concerns, or questions.

Sincerely,
