<span>Firstly, thanks to Edward for raising the question </span>of how we might collectively best use our time on Wednesday 10th to tackle the urgent and pervasive issue of systemic racism in academia and in our own institution.</div>

As I understand it the senate on Wednesday will be discussing a resolution urging a series of concrete steps to address this, both within the senate's own committee structure and within the U of O more broadly. Many of the latter proposals are aligned with
the recent demands of the Black Student Collective. Personally I hope the debate around this resolution is exactly the kind of opportunity for us all to consider what is the most meaningful and decisive action we can take at this moment and in future for structural
and enduring change on this issue at the U of O. I certainly hope this debate will occupy most of our available time in the meeting this week. I plan to be there.</div>

Hello Everyone _ I would prefer to see the Senate leadership arrange a good, educational program. possibly in cooperation with the Dept. of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies that helps us all educate ourselves on systemic racism. This gives those who do
not have a meeting like Ed is organizing for Earth Sciences to go to, or who are not able (for whatever reason) to join protests, something visible and concrete to do besides boycott the Senate.</div>

If you haven’t seen it yet, there has been a call to take Wednesday, June 10, as a day for White and non-Black People of Color in the academy to educate themselves on institutional racism in the USA, reflect on their position in this system, and define a detailed
plan of action for them to carry forward. I will not attend the UO Senate meeting on Wednesday out of respect for this call and the national moment we are in. I will be working with the Department of Earth Sciences to hold a departmental forum for discussing
these issues and coming up with a departmental plan of action for improving representation and inclusion in our field. I suggest that the rest of you should think about holding similar meetings with your units to define a path of action.</p>
