[Uosenate] no confidence; pay cuts

Dear Senate Colleagues,

I'm new to the Senate, so please forgive me if I'm out of line in writing
to the mailing list like this. Please also forgive my folly in addressing
two topics in one email.

1. A week ago there was a very hesitant discussion about a vote of no
confidence. After Friday's meeting with Sholz and Long, I imagine the
support for such a vote is much stronger: they, along with Poulson,
Moffitt, and others, have badly mismanaged the budget over the last few
years, and heads should roll. How should we proceed?

2. Many senior faculty are willing to accept pay cuts, if administrators
will too, in order to avert the much more damaging cuts now proposed.
It's good to make a counter-proposal to address the current budget
shortfall and not just say "don't cut this, don't cut that." It's hard
for the union to support pay cuts since, as one of my constituents put it,
their job is to get us raises. Maybe the senate is in a better position
to make such a proposal, with a view toward the health of the university
as a whole?

Yours,
Nick Addington
Associate Professor, Mathematics
