Hello everyone,

Over the next few weeks, the University Senate will facilitate the process of appointing a new faculty representative to the Board of Trustees. Ed Madison, Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication, is concluding his second two-year term in this important role. We are grateful for his dedicated service over the past four years.

The Board of Trustees is composed of 15 members, including the university president and 14 volunteer members appointed by the governor. The board's authority is defined by state law, and "each trustee takes great care to exercise his or her role with the highest of standards" (BOT website). One of the seats on the Board is designated for a faculty member. With Professor Madison's term ending, this faculty position will soon be open. The Senate is responsible for facilitating the nomination and selection process for this important role, which provides a faculty voice in high-level university governance.

All statutory faculty members, as defined by the UO Constitution, are eligible for this position. This includes tenure-track faculty, career faculty, and officers of administration who hold tenure in an academic department. The term is two years and begins in July 2025. There is no service compensation for this role (e.g., course buyouts), but travel expenses are covered when attending in-person Board meetings or official Board events.

Faculty interested in serving should email a candidate statement on or before Wednesday, May 14. Please describe your qualifications and your vision for serving on the Board of Trustees as the faculty representative. Email the statement to Betina Lynn, Senate Executive Coordinator, at betina at uoregon.edu<mailto:betina at uoregon.edu>. Candidate statements will be posted on the Senate website. Each candidate will also make a brief, three-minute statement at the UO Senate meeting on May 21<https://senate.uoregon.edu/senate-meetings/2024-2025/april-30-2025-agenda>.

Following the May 21 meeting, all statutory faculty members of the UO Senate will receive a link to a secret ballot to vote for their top candidate. Voting will be open for 24 hours.
The Senate President and Senate Vice President will tabulate the votes. The Senate President will then submit a memo to the Office of Governor Kotek that includes the names of all candidates, their statements, and the voting results. Governor Kotek will make the final selection, which will then be approved by the Oregon Senate.

I encourage you to share this opportunity widely with statutory faculty colleagues across campus and to consider submitting materials if you are member of the statutory faculty. This is a valuable chance to represent faculty perspectives at the highest level of university governance. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Alison
