Dear UO Senators,

As you can imagine, the situation Senate Leadership is now leading is dynamic, politically complex, and rapidly evolving. Hence, I wanted to provide a quick update on our Senate Leadership’s role in the current negotiations. I want to clarify that Senate Leadership is leading the negotiations, and we are in direct contact with the encampment and administration. Our shared goal is to reach a satisfactory resolution that ends peacefully. During my update at the UO Senate meeting on Wednesday, we will provide specific details on the approach Senate Leadership is taking to ameliorate this conflict as quickly as possible.

Cordially,

Gerard and Alison

Dear UO Senators,

As the conflict on campus escalates, Senate Leadership believes we need a new negotiation approach informed by shared governance to encourage authentic dialogue, mutual understanding, and empathy. Hence, Senate Leadership has consulted and secured the agreement of the University of Oregon administration and the UO Palestine Coalition. We have asked Professor Michael Dreiling, the Department Head of Sociology, to be an intermediary between the UO administration, the UO Senate, and the UO Palestine Coalition.

Professor Dreiling has agreed to serve in this role as he is a well-respected scholar on social movements and has extensive experience as a mediator, having served as the first faculty union president. Professor Dreiling will promote the values and interests of the university mission, its students, staff, faculty, and administration. Toward this end, Professor Dreiling, collaborating with the UO Senate, shall seek to codify, in a single text, an agreement between the UO Palestine Coalition and the University of Oregon administration. As this mediation progress moves forward – starting tonight - all parties will enter this dialogue, negotiating in good faith towards an expectation of agreement and expedited progress.

Cordially,

Gerard Sandoval and Alison Schmitke
