Hi all,
I don’t read that paragraph in quite the same way as Bill. Perhaps that’s because I’m uncertain that licensing revenue has been used to fund. In my limited experience, that has not been academics. Also, the source of the licensing revenue is unclear. At first read, I assumed it meant licensing related to the athletics program, in which case this use seems totally appropriate. However, if it also includes licensing revenue from UO research endeavors, that is more problematic.
Could we ask Mike to clarify what that paragraph means at the next Senate meeting … or in an email if that’s easier?
Best,
G

Dear Senators & Elliot -
I encourage you to read all of President Schill’s letter to the Board of Trustees. You will see that this news is not nearly as good as Elliot says it is. Quoting,
In light of this, I have decided to provide the athletics department with $1.2 million next year, from university licensing revenue (non-education and general funds) in return for its commitment to offer 5,000 discounted sports passes at $100 per pass to our students. These passes will entitle the holders admission to all home football games and some men’s and women’s basketball games for no additional charge.
This means that $1.2M that has historically gone to fund academic and other non-athletic purposes will go instead to the athletic department.

Good morning, Senators,
I’m very pleased to send along President Schill’s response to the motion we passed last week, “Supporting the ASUO’s decision to repurpose the student I-Fee money and opposing a new mandatory UO Fee for an athletic lottery ticket.” As you will see, President Schill accepted our recommendation to ratify ASUO’s budget and also to not recommend a new mandatory fee for the student ticket lottery. I’m attaching his note to the Senate and his memo to the Board ahead of their meeting next week.
When I stood for election to Vice President and President-Elect, I argued that I wanted the Senate to have more power. Given the constraints of the UO Constitution, the Senate is limited in its power outside of academic matters except insofar as we can persuade decision makers of our positions. This resolution is an example of what can happen when we build a reasoned argument through a consultative process. You might be aware that the resolution was the result of numerous conversations among ASUO leaders, Senators, the Senate Executive Committee, and many others.
Vice President Gildea and I congratulate everyone who crafted this motion and the substantial majority who supported it.
