[Uosenate] Task Force on Long-term Responses to COVID-19 memo

Good morning, senators and friends,

As you might recall, Senate and University leadership assembled the University Task Force on Long-term Responses to COVID-19 <https://president.uoregon.edu/university-task-force-covid-19> near the beginning of the pandemic. The Task Force was charged with advising the UO president on “how the institution should respond to financial challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.” The group met throughout the 20-21 AY as we discussed a wide range of ideas and issues on campus, met with a variety of groups on campus, and learned quite a bit about UO’s current and projected financial situation.

The financial impact of the pandemic became clear as the academic year progressed. In light of encouraging budget projections from enrollment and state support, and thanks to actions UO took to mitigate the substantial short-term financial impacts, the Task Force is pausing its work for the foreseeable future and not recommending specific actions at this point. The attached memo is an interim summary of what we learned and contains suggestions about areas of strategic priority for UO in the coming years.

I am grateful to my co-chair, Dean Madison-Cannon of the SOMD, as well as all of the members of the Task Force for their extensive work on the group this year. I would also like to thank President Schill and Provost Phillips for their support of  the Task Force and the effective collaboration with the administration.

The task force is available for future consultation as needed, though we do not expect to meet again before the end of the summer or early fall term.
