Hello Senators,
Below you can read the recommendations of the Senate’s Continuous Improvement and Evaluation of Teaching committee for AY20-21 course evaluations. The attached document describes the principles the CIET used in arriving at these recommendations and various alternative options they considered. Considerable thought has clearly been put into this proposal, but if you have additional comments or questions please pass them along to me. The Academic Council will be meeting on Tuesday to discuss some of the academic changes for this AY including this proposal.

Dear Elliot, Spike, Patrick and Janet,
Attached are the CIET senate committee’s recommendations regarding the elements that impact teaching evaluation. The attached document includes guiding principles, extreme examples to keep in mind, and then options for all 5 elements. Below are the recommendations that the committee has overwhelmingly agreed to (with some dissenting opinions). Note that the final recommendation is perhaps the most important, because that is when actually evaluation takes place (all other elements are just data collection tools, not evaluations in and of themselves). Let me know how I or the committee can be of service as a final decision is made.
Midway Student Experience Survey (M-SES):
Deploy as usual (instructor view only), but make some adjustments to the survey – limiting questions to the most important for context, and adding a question or two about student context
End-of-course Student Experience Survey (E-SES):
Deploy as usual (instructor, heads, committees can view), but make some adjustments to the survey – limiting questions to the most important for context, and adding a question or two about student context
Instructor Reflection:
Deploy as usual, (instructor, heads, committee can view) but make some adjustments to the survey – add question about remote work context, and collapsing questions across domains of professional, inclusive, engaged and research-informed.
Peer Review:
Conduct as individual unit feels they are able based on prioritization of service work and their desire to have peer insights alongside student feedback during evaluation of teaching. Consider prioritizing career faculty and pre-tenure faculty.
Evaluation of Teaching:
2020-21 included in future performance review with following caveat: Create a statement agreed upon by the Senate, Union and University that assures outlier performance for Instructors with a challenging work environment related to child/eldercare, technology/Internet access, illness, emotional well-being etc. not be an allowable reason to end employment.
Best,
Sierra
