I agree that this should be a prioritized conversation.

Hello Elizabeth,

A number of us in the senate would like to suspend the rules today to discuss the measures proposed for spring term and pass a resolution to guarantee academic standards. Kristen Yarris, Eileen Otis and I have discussed in particular language for a possible motion as follows:

At other campuses across the region and around the US, faculty are doing some or all of the following in response to efforts to mitigate risk of coronavirus spread and in transitioning to online instruction for spring term, 2020:

a) demanding two weeks at the start of spring term with no instruction as prep time to move all classes online,
b) acknowledging that online education is never the same quality or value as what we do in classroom/in person teaching. Not setting an expectation that we will be great or even good at teaching online in the spring, with so little transition time (doing just ok as a form of resistance),
c) making sure that online content is faculty intellectual property, not turning that over to universities or departments,
d) having week-long inservice meetings and trainings to prepare to teach online before actually doing so,
e) acknowledging the impact that all this will have not just on professional-class workers, but on the service workers around us, who clean and maintain and otherwise keep our universities running,
f) having the institution finance the technology and infrastructure we need to do online teaching (e.g. site licenses for Zoom and other online platforms),
g) recognizing and seeking to mitigate the impact of the virus not just on our universities and students, but on the public health systems that surround us.

Thanks,
Pedro Garcia-Caro

Dear Senate Colleagues and University Community,

As you know, we have a senate meeting scheduled for this afternoon in the EMU Crater Lake Room (3 - 5 PM) with a full meeting agenda.

At the present time, the UO facilities are open and operating under normal schedules. As such, we will be holding the senate meeting as planned.

You may attend the meeting with us in person as planned. Alternately, we have set up an option for you to join the meeting remotely using Zoom (see link information below). Please plan to join the meeting – whether in person or remote. (See the bottom of this email for a copy of the Senate meeting agenda).

Thank you for your service to the university.
