[Uosenate] Senate Motion on Resolution Against Racism and Systemic Oppression

Dear Elizabeth,

Please add my name to co-sponsor this motion. Kristin Yarris and I were crafting a similar motion to also ask for specific measures to monitor and assuage the impact the current context (including COVID-19 and Homeschooling for academic families, particularly faculty of color in our community) is having on women scholars and faculty of color. We are thinking of ways of adding additional points as friendly ammendments.
Thanks,

Pedro

Subject: [Uosenate] Senate Motion on Resolution Against Racism and Systemic Oppression

Dear Members of the University Senate,

We are reaching out to you in this moment in time that we believe calls for strong leadership from the university senate. Incoming senate president Elliot Berkman and I have prepared this senate resolution against racism and systemic oppression (attached).

The impetus for this resolution began when a student advocacy group reached out to us requesting that we put forward a resolution on their behalf. They asked us to craft “a strong, collaborative message to be sent to the University focused on addressing (their) feelings of grief, isolation, and unsafety.” We have attempted to do so here, by gathered advice and suggestions from numerous individuals from a variety of constituent groups on campus.

We are aware of the planned June 10 academic strike and are in support of these actions. In considering how to express your solidarity, please consider that we need quorum to consider new business, namely to vote on this anti-racism motion. We hope that you will consider attending the meeting, if only to engage with President Schill during his remarks from 3:15 pm, and/or only to consider and vote on this motion between 3:40 – 4:00 pm.

In closing, we realize that this request and resolution is arriving at a busy time for all of you, at a time when you must be exhausted, worried, and struggling with a mix of feelings. Thanks for taking time for this and please reach out to us with your thoughts, concerns, questions or to suggest edits.

P.S. If you are willing to co-sponsor the motion, please ‘reply all’ with a message to that effect, and we will include your name in the list of co-sponsors.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Skowron Elliot Berkman
