[Uosenate] #ShutDownSTEM and #ShutDownAcademia this Wednesday - I will be absent from the Senate

Hello Everyone _ I would prefer to see the Senate leadership arrange a good, educational program. possibly in cooperation with the Dept. of Indigenous, Race, and Ethnic Studies  that helps us all educate ourselves  on systemic racism. This gives those who do not have a meeting like Ed is organizing for Earth Sciences to go to, or who are not able (for whatever reason) to join protests, something visible and concrete to do besides boycott the Senate.

It would be great for the Senate to divert itself for this purpose. Otherwise,  just not coming, becomes an act that is pretty invisible in this age of social distancing.

I do agree with the sentiment that we should divert from 'business as usual'

Thanks Edward! I have to agree with Edward and Gina. In the times we are in right now, this needs to be discussed, resulting in action beyond just the Senate releasing a letter denouncing racism. If our agenda is not about systemic racial inequality and what is going on in our world right now, I too will be absent from the senate meeting in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

Elizabeth, I wonder if we do meet that we use the meeting not for business-as-usual, but for exactly the kind of reflection, discussion, and action this group is calling for. In other words, the meeting might focus squarely on systemic racism and generating action plans. If that won’t work, I will be absent as well.

Senate colleagues,



If you haven’t seen it yet, there has been a call to take Wednesday, June 10, as a day for White and non-Black People of Color in the academy to educate themselves on institutional racism in the USA, reflect on their position in this system, and define a detailed plan of action for them to carry forward. I will not attend the UO Senate meeting on Wednesday out of respect for this call and the national moment we are in. I will be working with the Department of Earth Sciences to hold a departmental forum for discussing these issues and coming up with a departmental plan of action for improving representation and inclusion in our field. I suggest that the rest of you should think about holding similar meetings with your units to define a path of action.
