[Uosenate] Wed 2/12 UO Senate Mtg -- additional materials

Dear UO Senators,

In preparation for our upcoming Senate meeting tomorrow 3-5 pm in the EMU Crater Lake Room, I am forwarding additional materials for your review in advance of the meeting.  These materials will also be posted in the Senate website's meeting agenda. I'm looking forward to some productive discussions tomorrow.


1.       pertaining to the New Agenda Item: Discussion and Vote on the Motion: US19/20-10: Revisions to Expedited Tenure policy<https://senate.uoregon.edu/2020/01/22/us19-20-10-revisions-to-expedited-tenure-process/>

a.       we have received feedback from a senator who raises two points that may serve as the basis for proposed amendments to the policy and want to share it with you in advance of the meeting, for your consideration. These are:

                                                               i.      RE:  2.2   new faculty who are hired through the expedited tenure process should remain at their current rank (i.e., full professors or associate professors). For associate professors to be considered for a promotion to full professor, it should require that the faculty member be reviewed by the regular promotion and tenure process.

                                                             ii.      RE: 2.5 Reducing the number of faculty from 3 to 5 on the FPC that serve on the expedited tenure subcommittee -- I don't think decreasing the number on the group is a good idea because of issues of oversight and representation. I would rather recommend increasing the size of the FPC to spread the work accordingly.



2.       pertaining to the Open Discussion Item: Search Guidelines for Academic Administrative Positions

a.       please review two documents attached here - we seek senator input on a draft of new Search Guidelines attached here.  We also provide a copy of the expired hiring guidelines as a point of comparison.  Senate leadership has met several times with the president and provost, and with the senate executive committee to draft and revise these guidelines.  Note that we currently have no formal guidelines in place at this time.
