Message on behalf of Associate Dean Daphne Gallagher, Clark Honors College ~

Each fall term the Clark Honors College sends out a call for course proposals to faculty across campus. Our affiliated faculty bring academic breadth, new curriculum, disciplinary expertise, and innovative teaching practice to our class schedule<https://honors.uoregon.edu/winter-2019-course-descriptions> each year. They also help the honors college to build closer partnerships with academic units at our university.

Our 2019-20 affiliated faculty<http://honors.uoregon.edu/affiliated-faculty> are teaching an impressive range of excellent courses this year and we would like to welcome a greater number of faculty, particularly tenured and tenure-track, to teach in CHC during 2020-21. Teaching an honors college class can be a great way to make students aware of departmental expertise and course offerings at the university. For many incoming CHC students, particularly those who are undeclared, a CHC course taught by affiliated faculty can help them navigate the choice of majors on campus. Teaching a CHC course may also offer faculty an opportunity to translate their current research into the classroom, or bring an interdisciplinary perspective to a given topic, and because of the small class sizes at CHC (15-19 students), it can encourage pedagogical experimentation which might then be scaled up to classes offered in the instructor’s department.

Course proposals are welcome from faculty from across all colleges and fields at UO. As the Honors College is working toward a revised curriculum, we are looking to enhance connections with faculty from UO’s science departments and the professional schools. While the CHC curriculum has often been characterized by literature and history courses, we aim to reflect the breadth and excellence of liberal arts education available at the university. Attention to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion – in course design and/or content - is also welcome.

We hope that you will share this opportunity with colleagues in your department (please see the Call for Course Proposals attached).

For complete details of CHC courses at the lower and upper division, please visit our website<http://honors.uoregon.edu/content/submit-course-proposal>. Faculty should submit course proposals via an online form<https://forms.uoregon.edu/forms/list/Clark%20Honors%20College> by January 7, 2020. Department head and dean approval is built into the submission process. This year, we are asking tenure-line and career faculty if they would be interested in considering a multi-year commitment to teach their proposed course in the CHC. Please be assured that the Dean and Department Head approvals are only in regards to application to teach in 2020-2021. In cases where we do offer a multi-year commitment, the nature of the commitment and the approvals would be negotiated with the faculty member, department head, and deans.

I am available to answer any questions you may have about the proposal process; CHC’s Finance Team will work with budget managers in the home departments on teaching appointments in CHC. Typically, labor distributions are provided for Career NTTF who will be teaching Honors College courses in load, while no funds are exchanged for tenure-related faculty. As CHC core faculty are also teaching across campus during the academic year, this can facilitate affiliated faculty teaching with CHC. CHC also hires a limited number of Pro Tem faculty each year.

Please feel free to get in touch with me for any questions relating to specific course proposals or the submission process. In the meantime, we would like to convey our thanks for forwarding the CHC Call for Proposals to your faculty and for your support of the Clark Honors College.
