Subject: FW: Feedback requested – U Oregon Interpretive Exhibits Committee
~Message sent on behalf of Vice President Yvette Alex-Assensoh and Ms. Lisa Abia-Smith~
Dear Strategies Group Leaders,
We are writing to you today to seek your feedback on an important initiative on campus at the University of Oregon.
As you may know, in fall 2015 the Black Student Task Force presented a series of demands, among them the renaming of Dunn and Deady Halls, respectively. President Schill commissioned a university committee to develop recommendations for criteria to be utilized in assessing whether to rename the buildings. The President reviewed and supplemented the criteria, and commissioned a panel of historians to assess the records of Dunn and Deady, respectively, using the established criteria. The report<http://president.uoregon.edu/sites/president2.uoregon.edu/files/deady_dunn_final_report_08-05-16.pdf> was presented to the President and shared widely with our university community and other stakeholders, who were encouraged to provide input on whether to rename the halls.
After reviewing the feedback and consulting with various stakeholders, the President decided to rename Dunn, but to retain Deady’s name. In light of these decisions, the President charged a committee of faculty, staff, students and community members to propose exhibits, educational opportunities and other possibilities, which recognize and commemorate the history of African Americans at UO and in the State of Oregon, within the context of the names for each of the respective buildings.
For the past few months, the committee has been working in collaboration with the Oregon Historical Society, the Oregon Black Pioneers Association and other resources to gain a better understanding of possibilities within our reach. The committee will ultimately outline two possible interpretive exhibits for each location.
As part of this process, we want to hear from our greater community so that our recommendations are enriched by a diverse range of experiences and ideas. Below is a link to an online survey that asks four brief questions. Would you be so kind as to help disseminate the survey link to your Strategy group members? Please provide your feedback by close of business, Monday, June 5. Our final recommendations will be greatly enriched with feedback that includes a diverse range of experiences, perspectives, and ideas.
