Hello, Mechistas, Mujeres and LSGers.
Just passing this one on. Teatro Milagro is a premier Chicanx/Latinx theater company, in our NW. It has been around since the 80s. Olga Sanchez was the former Artistic Director (now Artistic Director Emerita at Milagro) and is now a PhD student at the UO's Theater Arts Department.
Perhaps this is of interest to a broad section of UO community? Considering Ben Linder had ties to the state, one of the EMU rooms was name after Ben Linder, and there being a Ben Linder collection at the UO Libraries. There also used to be a Ben Linder Commemoration about environmental, global and social justice issues. He was also an engineer who put his degree to work in a social justice context - which is also relevant considering the push for STEM/STEAM and the new science complex.
I will Danielle know that I have sent her information contact out to different UO folks. - Rosa

Subject: Experience a fusion of art and science at the University of Oregon

Hello Rosa,
My name is Danielle and I am a performer/teaching artist with Teatro Milagro. I am reaching out to you because we have a new bilingual play called El Payaso that we are touring throughout Oregon this spring. This 60-minute ecodrama was inspired by the life of Ben Linder and shares with a new generation the inspirational story of one idealist who saw the potential of art and science to help save the world, one small village at a time. To learn more, please see the press release below.
Teatro Milagro has toured across the nation bringing bilingual performances to universities through collaborations with multicultural centers, Latin American and Mexican American Studies, environmental groups, and various clubs and student groups. I am hopeful that we can collaborate with your student groups in this manner to include your campus in our upcoming spring tour. We have set aside the week of April 17-21st to focus on performances at local colleges.
Below is my contact information. I will follow up with you soon to make sure that you received this email. If you'd like to reach out to me sooner than that, please don't hesitate to email or call me.
Looking forward to speaking with you soon,
Danielle Pecoff

A bilingual play by Teatro Milagro
Written by Emilio Rodriguez Directed by Georgina Escobar
Jan. 12 - 21, 2017
Touring Feb. - Nov. of 2017

Amidst chaos, confusion and war, an American engineer worked to bring electricity to rural villages in Nicaragua. "El Payaso" invites the audience to learn the story of an incredible man and the extraordinary people with whom he unexpectedly connected. Our tale is told through the eyes of Elías, a Latino college student, traveling to Nicaragua thirty years later, to encounter the people who are still carrying on the work of the late Ben Linder. An engineer and a clown for a cause, Linder participated in rallies and health campaigns that brought vaccines to children. His memory lives on in the work of Clowns without Borders and various environmental groups that are collaborating to bring this story to life. With red noses and humor, the performers will share the value of "thinking globally, while acting locally."
In 1987 Ben Linder was killed by Contras in Nicaragua, during a war that was fueled by the Regan administration of the United States. For the 30th anniversary of Ben's passing, this play will share with a new generation, an inspirational story of one idealist who saw the potential of art and science to help save the world, one small village at a time. [Text Box:] El Payaso community partners include: Clowns without Borders, Verde, the Ben Linder Scholarship Fund, the Intertwine Alliance and Friends of Trees. Performances can be paired with an eco-drama theatre workshop that explores social justice issues. Ajai Terrazas Tripathi leads the group, in his 7th season with Milagro and is joined by Marlon Jimenez Oviedo from Costa Rica, Emile Dultra from Brazil and Danielle Pecoff from Idaho. The environment today is an issue that affects all Americans and Latinos, the largest minority population, must be invited to the table to participate so that their voices can be heard and their participation embraced.
