Hi Heidi,
Can you share our fundraising page far and wide?
After our fight to save the minor last year, we are so excited that UO is making it a priority to fundraise for Disability Studies. With enough donations, we’ll ensure that UO Disability Studies is around for decades to come. We want to expand Disability Studies into a full-fledged program but we need your help.
Please share our fundraising page on your social media and with friends/family. https://duckfunder.uoregon.edu/project/40875
Thanks again for your support last year. This would not be happening without you. And a special thanks to Colin Wilfrid, Ashley Osborne, and Clare Corydon for their help on our promotional video. Heroes.

Dear Heidi,
I am so excited to share some wonderful news! Thanks to your collective efforts and unwavering support, the Legislature overwhelmingly passed Senate Bill 1508<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/default.salsalabs.org/T3367571f-bfa7-4615-8249-c3bb5a65de63/6a0ed977-5dd8-4ada-a810-9e5b0f874207__;!!C5qS4YX3!EUu-QzeUdm8jcZ08l_Efy8-c3MF2D6sewO9ccnhyPenMX_mslIg1phy-n6Ygd15C4chOsMPY97Iaj6Sj$> yesterday to ban Quality-Adjusted Life-Years (QALY) in Oregon! We’ve been working for years to end the use of this offensive and discriminatory scoring system that devalues people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, the elderly, and people of color, and we are thrilled to see it finally happening with bipartisan support! The only remaining step is the Governor signing the bill into law.<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/default.salsalabs.org/Tfda7c08d-31c8-4e73-bd42-1e6fa9dd545b/6a0ed977-5dd8-4ada-a810-9e5b0f874207__;!!C5qS4YX3!EUu-QzeUdm8jcZ08l_Efy8-c3MF2D6sewO9ccnhyPenMX_mslIg1phy-n6Ygd15C4chOsMPY989MqmhC$>
Ask Governor Kotek to Sign SB 1508<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/default.salsalabs.org/T4c7b654c-c88e-434f-9198-8a4babc98ea4/6a0ed977-5dd8-4ada-a810-9e5b0f874207__;!!C5qS4YX3!EUu-QzeUdm8jcZ08l_Efy8-c3MF2D6sewO9ccnhyPenMX_mslIg1phy-n6Ygd15C4chOsMPY9273M_1K$>
The end of QALY in Oregon marks a significant step forward in creating a world where people with disabilities can access the healthcare we need to thrive and reach our full potential. You played a pivotal role in making this legislative milestone a reality, and I wholeheartedly thank you for your engagement. Whether it was through contacting legislators, spreading awareness, or simply staying informed, you got it done!
I hope you’re proud of the growing list of positive changes your efforts are bringing—including recent news that, after receiving thousands of complaints from our community, the Census Bureau is dropping a controversial proposal to change how they count people with disabilities<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/default.salsalabs.org/T1bc79f4d-26f6-43fa-8423-d0e1fcbf795b/6a0ed977-5dd8-4ada-a810-9e5b0f874207__;!!C5qS4YX3!EUu-QzeUdm8jcZ08l_Efy8-c3MF2D6sewO9ccnhyPenMX_mslIg1phy-n6Ygd15C4chOsMPY92qBpoiR$>. Never doubt we can change the world.
Thank you—and please remember that, while it’s short, the 2024 Legislative Session isn’t quite over yet. We have less than two weeks to go and some of our toughest fights ahead. We’re still closely tracking issues such as the criminalization of disabilities in hospitals<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/default.salsalabs.org/Tbf009a40-5f34-4e07-a714-afebd1e9ac69/6a0ed977-5dd8-4ada-a810-9e5b0f874207__;!!C5qS4YX3!EUu-QzeUdm8jcZ08l_Efy8-c3MF2D6sewO9ccnhyPenMX_mslIg1phy-n6Ygd15C4chOsMPY9xc5RG3D$>, so please watch your inbox for ways you can quickly help!

New Digital Accessibility Guidelines: The U.S. Office of Management and Budget recently released a new report and guidelines requiring federal agencies to improve digital accessibility for people with disabilities. Nearly half of the most popular federal government websites are not fully accessible, which prevents access to critical services and information for millions of Americans. Updated guidelines include having people with disabilities test new websites before they are published, regularly scanning live content to discover and fix issues, and more. Working Together to Stop Healthcare Discrimination: We recently joined The Leadership Conference, National Health Law Program, and the National Partnership for Women & Families in urging the Biden Administration to finalize and publish the rule implementing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. Section 1557 is the first Federal civil rights law to broadly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in all federally funded health care programs. The final rule clarifies standards used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to ensure individuals cannot be denied access to healthcare or health coverage because of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.
