Nothing About Us Without Us!
Disability survey questions can't be changed before consulting with the disability community!

Dear Heidi,

The American Community Survey (ACS)—and specifically the survey's disability questions—is one of the few sets of data we have from the federal government about the disability population in the United States. This numerical information is critical in formulating federal, state, and local policymaking that impacts the daily lives of people with disabilities.

In September, the Census Bureau proposed changes to the survey's disability questions. The new questions in the ACS have a strong possibility of undercounting the disability population leading to reduced funding for critical federal programs and loss of critical data demonstrating the needs of the community. This was all done with no involvement or consultation with the disability community before the changes were released.

Unfortunately, there is a long and tragic history of others making decisions for, or that directly impact, us without considering our community's thoughts, desires, wishes, and most importantly actual experiences. This is why “Nothing About Us Without Us” is the rallying cry of the disability rights movement: to provide a reminder about the need for this critical and important engagement.

That is exactly what happened here, a failure to consult or engage with the disability community over critical questions about disability in the ACS. To my knowledge, the Census Bureau did no meaningful engagement with the disability community before releasing this proposal, and that is unacceptable.

Your Comments Matter

Comments are currently being accepted by the Census Bureau about the drafted disability survey questions. Now is the time to say how important this data is, and no changes should be implemented to disability survey questions without first consulting with the disability community!
