Dear Friends of UO Disability Studies,
The Disability Studies Executive Board is delighted to make the formal announcement that the College of Arts and Sciences, together with private donors, have come forward with enough financial support to save the University of Oregon Disability Studies Minor. Dr. Brian Trapp of the Creative Writing Department will assume its leadership in September.
We owe our thanks and deepest gratitude for the perseverance, hard work, generosity, and creative problem-solving of students, faculty, administrators, parents, and all our supporters who insisted, persisted, and found an elegant solution. You wrote letters and statements, voiced concerns, spoke in meetings, researched possible avenues, brainstormed, negotiated, and built a community. Your passion has awed us. We especially thank English Department Head Mark Whalan, Business Manager Melissa Bowers, the CAS deans, and the student representatives on the DS Executive Board, Siri Chotechuang, Clare Corydon, Ash Osborne, Natalie Pfeifer, and Nick Piearcy, who have worked tirelessly all year to bring us to this happy conclusion.
That said, we still need more support and advocacy to ensure a bright future for UO Disability Studies. The university and private funding committed so far will cover current expenses and keep the minor open, but won't allow us to expand and grow. To fulfill our mission of spreading disability knowledge and equity, we aim to hire more faculty and become a full-fledged academic program. Like the disabled communities we study and serve, we aim to thrive, not just survive.
You can help by donating large or small amounts to the new Disability Studies Fund<https://securelb.imodules.com/s/1540/lg22/form.aspx?sid=1540&gid=1&pgid=11847&cid=30233&dids=1705&bledit=1&dids=1795>. A group of donors have created a permanent endowment, which will pay out annual funds to support UO Disability Studies forever. Please join them if you can.
It's time to celebrate all we have accomplished. Please join us at the Disability Studies Party on Friday, June 16 from 7-9 pm in the Living Learning Center South Performance Hall, 1416 Columbia Street, University of Oregon. Your invitation is attached. We will honor this year's graduates and enjoy food, dancing, and each other's good company.
Thanks again. See you soon.
With joy, relief, love, and gratitude,
The UO Disability Studies Executive Board
