Subject: Request to share Jan 18th workshop + winter term UDL & disability-related workshops

Dear DS Exec Board colleagues,

In collaboration with others on campus*, I'm facilitating a number of upcoming workshops on UDL, avoiding ableist language, and more this and next term (see our Accessible, Inclusive, & Universally Designed Winter Workshop Series<https://teaching.uoregon.edu/accessible-inclusive-universally-designed-winter-workshop-series> for more info!). Registration is low, but what folks are offering is I think significant! Would you forward this email (all or just the information below my signoff) to anyone you think might be interested?

A description of tomorrow's session is below, but I'm so glad that we'll be joined by Lauri's awesome colleague Sheen Hua, who is UO's expert in thinking about how we choose to represent information in our classes, so that all of our students can perceive it, understand the symbols and language, and meaningfully comprehend it. Come if you can!

*appreciation to Kyle for tentatively sharing his expertise on a February UDL session, and a heads up to others that you may get an email from me asking if you'd be open to participating in a faculty panels or future sessions, so we can highlight what folks are doing to support ALL our students!

My best,

Laurel

Universal Design for Learning & ‘Multiple Means of Representation’
Wednesday, January 18, 11am-12pm (on Zoom)
Register at this MyTrack link<https://uomytrack.pageuppeople.com/learning/3509/timeslot/282745>
Find out more this and other workshops in the Accessible, Inclusive, and Universally Designed Winter Workshop Series on our webpage<https://teaching.uoregon.edu/accessible-inclusive-universally-designed-winter-workshop-series>

In order to learn, students (like all of us) must have their needs around how information is presented me. This means having options for:

  * Perception (how info is displayed, alternatives for visual or auditory representation of info, offering multiple illustrations instead of just one),
  * Clarification of symbols and language that may need some level of translation
  * Comprehension, or how we internalize information, so it can become usable knowledge
Learn more about how you might anticipate and meet these student needs, identify one or two changes you’d like to make to how you represent materials, and come away with some concrete next steps in making those changes. We also welcome challenges you've been wrestling with that you'd like to co-think about!

By the end of this workshop, we hope participants will be more able to:

  * Characterize what Universal Design for Learning, representation, & checkpoints are & why they're used
  * Identify the role representation plays in learning (including as a barrier to it)
  * Use concepts of a) revisiting learning objectives & b) “plus one” thinking to select an area to apply additional representation options to
This session is led by Faculty Consultant Laurel Bastian and offers expertise from AEC Accessible Technology Manager Sheen Hua, who is the UO staff frequently called to respond to the trickiest representation-related challenges for instructors and students.
