Dear UODSP List Members,

For interested students of architecture and design … This GSA competition is for you! I hope you’ll apply. You can make a difference!

First though, a personal historical note about Eugene’s disability activism that succeeded in getting the GSA to make our federal courthouse wheelchair accessible. Not long after I graduated UO School of Law in 1995, the feds designed and constructed the new federal courthouse located at 8th and Mill. It took the disabled community to get a resistant GSA to put a ramp in the front of the courthouse. Yes, unbelievably, the original plan meant the only access to the front entrance was by stairs. It was actually suggested that the demanded ramp be installed at the rear entrance so as not to ruin the overall esthetic of a grand staircase. Ultimately, we got the staircase. Not the one we wanted or where. Today, the GSA is welcoming your input. Progress!

Heidi

GSA invites students in architecture and design programs to apply universal design ideas to reimagine a federal workspace that provides an accessible, barrier-free, and all-inclusive experience.

Federal facilities are required to comply with the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Standards.<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDIsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjEyMDEuNjc1MjE1NDEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5hY2Nlc3MtYm9hcmQuZ292L2FiYS8ifQ.ShW8T6AMCuq_9Y1oG2X64-WsgvsHFDFdWI6cuHKo93E/s/9114010/br/149372767456-l__;!!C5qS4YX3!F9AYFpFRPhWXrVYct6bET0NNN0v2-jp2TMc5JTA421dzko_HWVFJvb1-JTbHriVgZbIvW2MC5mdPLVA0ivFVXmGRmwJQPH1DQD5K40Ue$> The standards provide minimum scoping and technical requirements for accessibility to sites, facilities, buildings, and elements by individuals with disabilities. The Access for All competition aims to find innovative solutions to reduce barriers so that all people with disabilities have access to federal buildings and facilities.

Applications for the competition are due by May 1, 2023 via GSA’s "ACCESS FOR ALL" Universal Design in Federal Facilities webpage<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/lnks.gd/l/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjEyMDEuNjc1MjE1NDEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5jaGFsbGVuZ2UuZ292Lz9jaGFsbGVuZ2U9YWNjZXNzLWZvci1hbGwifQ.zpdC3eMa49tm2wrFreHKAcc358YSuAIz2cV5UmaL5ls/s/9114010/br/149372767456-l__;!!C5qS4YX3!F9AYFpFRPhWXrVYct6bET0NNN0v2-jp2TMc5JTA421dzko_HWVFJvb1-JTbHriVgZbIvW2MC5mdPLVA0ivFVXmGRmwJQPH1DQCV-N2In$>.
