Dear advocates,

It has been my privilege to support the Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities during this time of transition for OCDD and period of uncertainty in the world. COVID-19, and our quest for racial justice continues to alter our world into a “new reality.” And it is with hope, determination, and optimism for where we are headed that I am excited to open the search for our next permanent Executive Director.

The person to step into this position next will see us through the rest of this pandemic, ensure we act on our belief that Black Lives Matter, navigate through challenging budgets for our state, and join the Council at a time when we are beginning to develop our strategic plan for the next 5 years. I speak for our Council and our staff when I say, we are committed to finding the right person for this job, and that requires your help.

In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), OPB is joining with other public media partners around the country to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. The “Move To Include” initiative highlights the unique and diverse stories of people with disabilities.

OCDD is happy to have contributed to sharing the importance of the history of the Fairview Training Center. These four stories and additional resources are available to teachers, families, and students through the PBS Learning Media collection.

Senate Bill 493 passed in 2019. It creates a Human Rights Commission (HRC). The Commission will safeguard the dignity and basic human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

The Commission will include people from different roles:
·     A person with I/DD who receives community-based services
·     A family member of a person with I/DD
·     A sibling of a person with I/DD
·     A self-advocate for the rights of people with I/DD and who represents,
·     in a professional capacity, an organization that promotes disability self-advocacy
·     Two people from disability advocacy organizations
·     An I/DD service provider
·     An expert regarding behavior intervention models (preferably the Oregon Intervention System)

It’s also important that the Commission reflect the diversity of our state and of the people with I/DD in Oregon.
