Call for Proposals: Pacific/Western Disability Studies Symposium
WELCOMING DIFFERENT VOICES:
DISABILITY STUDIES IN COMMUNITY, CULTURE, & CURRICULUM
The Disability Studies program at Eastern Washington University is
pleased to host a two-day symposium focusing on the place of Disability
Studies principles and disability rights practices within the everyday
life of diverse communities and across academic curricula. While the
symposium is open to all sorts of work, we especially invite those
addressing how Disability Studies contributes to existing and developing
communities; how Disability Studies can benefit professional and
practice-based education programs? We invite proposals for panels,
individual papers, and workshops. We are particularly excited about our
“DS & Curriculum” workshop in which participants will work through
an actual syllabus.
Keynote Speakers:
Dr. Alison Kafer - Disability Studies scholar focusing upon the
intersection of feminism, queerness, and disability.
Dave Reynolds – Spokane area community leader and independent living
activist with Access-4-All Spokane.
Dr. Nirmala Erevelles - Writer, activist, University of Alabama
professor, and expert in how social oppression exists due to racial,
socioeconomic, and physiological diversity.
Free public events will take place May 17-18, 2019, on the Riverpoint
Campus of Eastern Washington University in Spokane, WA. Join us!
Deadline for proposals: January 1, 2019, 11:59 pm PST. Abstracts for
papers, posters, or descriptions of artwork.
We request that you register by April 1, 2019 for any parts of Symposium
you wish to attend. Lunch will be provided on Saturday May 18, 2019 to
registered attendees.

REGISTRATION AND CALL FOR PROPOSALS
We are interested in proposals that have potential for creating a
positive impact in bringing Disability research, Social Justice, and
Diversity minded approaches to the forefront.
Papers and Works-in-Progress:
In addition to standard paper presentations, participants will break
into small groups on Saturday afternoon to workshop their manuscripts,
grant, applications, or syllabi which will be circulated prior to the
symposium. This is designed to be a space for scholars (particularly
graduate students) to give and receive feedback on works-in-progress.
Submissions will be sorted into working groups based on shared areas of
interest, methodologies, or themes. Written work should be submitted in
English or Spanish. Papers may not exceed 50 double-spaced pages
including references and appendices.
Note: We are also seeking workshop moderators and volunteers. Moderators
are welcome to submit a paper proposal as well.
Posters and Art Work:
Prepare a poster or art work to display and discuss on Friday evening
before Alison Kafer's presentation and/or during lunch on Saturday. If
you prefer not to discuss your work with the public, you may include a
1-page narrative explaining the piece and its connection with Disability
Studies.
WHERE TO SUBMIT:
All submissions should be provided as Word documents sent to:
PWDSS2019 at gmail.com
