October 2016
From the CEO
It was a bit quiet in our Eugene, Oregon office last month as MIUSA staff traveled to Washington, D.C., England, Brazil, and other locations for a whirlwind of trainings, conferences, and events, all designed to promote and celebrate our work in advancing disability rights and leadership globally.
At the Association of Women in Development (AWID) Forum, it was wonderful to be surrounded by over 25 disabled women activists from around the world and their passion and enthusiasm for disabled women's rights. Our world renowned photo exhibit was there with us in Bahia, Brazil before traveling to Washington for its premiere exhibition at the World Bank. This event held special significance with attendance from friends, colleagues and alumni as well as 40 high-level visitors from 6 countries who convened as part of MIUSA's RightsNow! project.
In addition, MIUSA hosted several exchanges in Eugene, from our signature Women's Institute on Leadership and Disability to other life-changing exchange programs preparing high school and college students with disabilities for their year of study and cultural immersion in the U.S.
Recognizing that we need many allies to incorporate disability rights and inclusion into their agendas, we presented trainings, conference sessions, and institutes to diverse audiences and produced numerous training manuals, podcasts, journals, videos, and award-winning websites, which you can read more about in this newsletter.
It was an emotional summer as we celebrated MIUSA's 35th anniversary with honored guest speaker, Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy. We'll be sharing more reflections from our 35th anniversary soon!
Thanks to all of our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, donors, and all of you who read this newsletter for the support you have given MIUSA.
Susan Sygall

Our 8th Women's Institute on Leadership and Disability was one of our most ambitious yet, with delegates bringing a sophisticated understanding of what is needed to advance the status of disabled women and girls. As Boikhutso from Botswana so eloquently put it, "We caught this fire from MIUSA. Let's keep the fire burning throughout the world. As 20 women from 20 countries throughout the world, we can make it." See where WILD will go from here.<http://list-manage.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d39e81314218b930d5315426a&id=2b5bd3a69f&e=37466117e1>

For the first time, the World Bank hosted MIUSA's “Brilliant and Resilient” photo exhibit, showcasing women with disabilities from around the world and their achievements in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities in their communities. At the reception, Charlotte McClain-Nhlapo of the World Bank acknowledged that "Until we engage women with disabilities as leaders, we're not achieving inclusive development."
