The theme of this year’s Pacific & Western Disability Studies Symposium is MAKING DISABILITY PUBLIC: ARTS, SCHOLARSHIP, AND ACTIVISM. Free public events will take place May 12-14, 2016, on the Seattle and Bothell campuses of the University of Washington. Featured speakers include artist Riva Lehrer and novelist Nicola Griffith! We are accepting proposals for manuscripts on all DS-related topics, as well as for posters and art pieces.
If you have any questions about the upcoming UW Disability Studies symposium or the CFP, please write to Joanne Woiak and Heather Evans: uwdisabilitystudies at gmail.com
-Proposal deadline: April 1st.
-We request that you register by April 1st for any parts of the symposium you wish to attend.
-Lunch will be provided on Sat May 14th to those who register.

Friday, May 13, 4:30pm, community event at UW Seattle, Odegaard 220 -Displays of art & posters -Reading by novelist Nicola Griffith, author of “Slow River” and “Hild”
-Talk by artist Riva Lehrer, an award-winning painter, writer, and speaker whose work explores issues of identity and cultural depictions of disability.
Saturday, May 14, all-day symposium at UW Seattle, HUB -10am Keynote panel: Incorporating Disability Studies into Our Work & Supporting Students. Ryan Parrey, Social Work faculty member at Eastern Washington University, will speak based on his experience teaching DS to pre-service professionals. Maud Steyaert, Director of Disability Services at North Seattle College, will offer remarks that center on recognizing and countering forms of academic ableism, audism, and neurotypicality in the classroom and on campus. There will be ample time for facilitated conversation with the audience.
-12pm Lunch with time to browse posters & art displays.
-1:30pm Keynote panel: Eugenics & Disability: Advocating for a Public Apology in Washington.
-2:45-4:45pm Concurrent workshops: Emerging Scholarship in Disability Studies. Participants will pre-circulate their papers and projects.
