Incorrigible Ethics: Doing Disability Studies with Foucault

Despite explicit commitments to principles such as respect and nonmaleficence, mainstream bioethics presupposes an able-bodied subject and devalues the lives of those who are disabled. Bringing together contemporary research in feminist theory, disability studies, and Foucault scholarship, this presentation advocates for an alternative to what Fiona Kumari Campbell has described as the "negative ontology of disability." Foucault's genealogically-based method is proposed for as an alternative for disability ethics.
