OPB Oregon Art Beat features DanceAbility

DanceAbility - Pioneering teacher, choreographer, and performer Alito Alessi travels the world to work with "all people."

Eugene, Oregon and State-Wide – On February 4th, 2016 DanceAbility International will have the honor of being featured on OPB’s Emmy-award winning show, Oregon Art Beat. Oregon Art Beat is a local arts series, entering its 17th season in fall 2015. Art Beat profiles artists, musicians and artisans from around Oregon and the Northwest.

Alito Alessi began forming the DanceAbility method in 1988, with the intention of bringing people together, across the full spectrum of abilities and disabilities, through dance. The work of DanceAbility International decreases prejudice and misconceptions about diversity in the field of dance, and by extension in society. The DanceAbility method respects each individual’s abilities and enhances participants’ self-esteem within a context of artistic creativity and exchange.
The DanceAbility method is widely regarded internationally as the most comprehensive system for integrating people with and without disabilities in movement and dance. U.S. Embassies in seven countries have sponsored DanceAbility activities. In Oregon, about 2,000 people participate as class participants, dancers, or audience members annually. World-wide, about 5,000 people participate annually.

Dance Magazine (the national dance magazine) said of Alessi’s choreography, “it will put Eugene on the dance map.”
