Hello Heidi,
I was wondering if you might consider posting the message below to the list serve? MIUSA has some wonderful mentoring opportunities coming up for interested students, I would encourage anyone to send this out through their networks.
Thank you,
John Ahlen
International Student and Scholar Services
I wanted to check in with you regarding a MIUSA exchange program occurring in August.
As we have done for many years, MIUSA will conduct an arrival orientation for international high school students with disabilities on the FLEX and YES programs in August to help prepare them for an academic year in host communities across the U.S. A major component of the program is linking our exchange students with local mentors with disabilities who can share some of their high school experiences and advice. In the past we have found that college age students are able to offer the best incite and advice.
I am reaching out to you because we are currently looking for appropriate mentors in the area who would be interested in joining us on program for a few hours in August. Would it be possible to recommend any UO students with disabilities that you feel like might act a good mentor? We have had excellent contacts in the past, but most have graduated and moved out of Eugene.
Mentors would join us on Saturday, August 15th from 3:00pm-5:00pm at North Eugene High school. We will be participating in a school tour then will break into the small group discussions with mentors. We would ask mentors to meet us at the school and to bring any adaptive technology they use and feel comfortable bringing with them. We will MIUSA staff with each small group to help facilitate the discussions and support as needed and we will also have ASL interpreters for the students with hearing disabilities.
Please let me know if I can clarify anything or if it would be helpful to send more information that you could share with prospective mentors. Any help you can provide is very much appreciated!
Thank you,
Ruby Holmes
