Subject: REAL ID ACT: Important Information for UO Employees who Enter US Federal Buildings or Facilities

Good Afternoon Travel Coordinators -

Many of you support travelers who enter US Federal buildings or facilities in the course of their UO business travel. Please notify them that they should carry a second form of Identification (in addition to their Oregon driver's license) with them, starting October 10, 2017. (Now through Oct. 10, 2018)

The REAL ID Act was implemented by the US Department of Homeland Security in 2005 requiring states to comply with "set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses." The Act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver's licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act's minimum standards. One of the purposes covered by the Act is accessing Federal facilities and buildings.

Oregon is on the list of states that has not yet complied with the REAL ID act.

This does not affect airport security as TSA will continue to accept an Oregon driver's license through January 2018. https://www.dhs.gov/news/2016/12/12/tsa-notify-travelers-upcoming-2018-real-id-airport-enforcement However it is a potential issue with unknown consequences for faculty who travel to federal facilities in other states (like national laboratories, federal courthouses, or some federal agencies with ID requirements).

For more information please see the US Dept. of Homeland Security regarding the REAL ID Act: https://www.dhs.gov/real-id

Please be sure to share this information to your travelers who enter US Federal buildings or facilities.
