Abstract: The field
of early childhood special education is recognized for
conducting social-emotional
intervention research designed to improve the quality of life
for the children
and families we serve. However, our field has been criticized
for approaches
that are inconsistent with the values and beliefs we articulate
as central to
our scientific practice. As such, a shift in our endeavors is
warranted. Given
the specific calls within the field to engage in human centered
social-emotional intervention research, Wahman and colleagues
(2023) posit five
guidelines to enhance our implementation science and I will
discuss these guidelines
as it relates to my own research agenda. These guidelines are
(a) understand
the historical and immediate context of clients served; (b)
incorporate best
practices in assessment to reduce bias; (c) center children’s
and families’
voices in social validity measures; (d) address confounding
variables to
fidelity of implementation; and (e) examine racial/ethnic
diversity in team
composition.

bio: Charis Lauren
Wahman is an assistant professor of special education at
Michigan State
University and a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral
(BCBA-D). She is
also affiliated faculty in School Psychology. Using
implementation science
principles, her research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness
of
evidence-based behavioral interventions in early childhood
classrooms. She also
examines the experiences of families whose children have
significant social and
emotional needs. Her research aims to understand the contextual
factors that
hinder or enhance children’s behavioral health outcomes while
improving the
quality of school-based intervention services for young children
and
family-professional partnerships. Her empirical and
practitioner-oriented work
has been published in journals such as Remedial and Special
Education, Children
and Youth Services Review, Education and Treatment of
Children, Topics
in Early Childhood Special Education, Psychology in
the Schools, Early
Childhood Education Journal, Young Children and Young
