Greetings colleagues:

Below is a message from our CPSY doctoral program student leaders that would be helpful for all to read. In recognition of today being a day of observance and demonstration for immigrants across the US, they are canceling their student meeting today. Our
student leaders also provide additional resources and links to resources. Some of these resources relate to political action, and so if you forward to students, be sure to note that you are sending these as resources and for educational purposes for your students.
Regardless of the political agenda, ALL of our students should be engaged in the conversation and become aware of how they can be supportive to their own colleagues.

As instructors and GEs we have a responsibility to the work of the University and always want to do what is best for all students. My hope is that all of you make decisions today about your work that is based on your conscience, and that responds to how
to balance this responsibility with our value of being in solidarity with marginalized and vulnerable communities and our own students. The feeling of fear and vulnerability is becoming increasingly heightened for many of our colleagues and their families.
And in Seattle a student with DACA protection was just detained by ICE...breaking a thin but perceptible protective barrier.

In classes today, please let students know that you are aware of what is happening nationally and locally and express continued support as I know you all do anyway. Please add to your conversations some of the content below and encourage students to engage
with new resources on campus. The "Dreamers" group on campus has been working diligently to create spaces for faculty to learn about our options, please seek those out.

See below for additional resources to share.

Personally, I have been reflecting on what I will do today. I do not teach a large undergraduate class right now, so I have been thinking about what I would do if I did have a class to teach today. I believe, but am not sure, that I would hold class and
not cancel class. I would make it clear that students who choose not to attend today will not be penalized. I would open class by providing some of the resources noted below and note what is going on nationally. I would add content, if I didn't have it,
on the make-up of the US and our interdependence on the world workforce, and I would comment on common consequences to families around the world who are under regimes of strict and enforced immigration policies. And then I would continue teaching my lecture.
I would end class by highlighting the preeminent role of empathy and solidarity in counseling and human service work. And I would ask students to reach out to others, check in with each other, and share what they learn. Our students across our Department
are already really good at this and many are models for us.

I am not instructing you what to do at all - just reflecting for myself on what I think balances my own sense of mission for all students and supports our most vulnerable students and hopefully challenges all students to learn, reflect, and act.

Thanks all and be well. And thanks for all you do!
