Dear Graduate Students,
Welcome to the start of a new academic year at the University of Oregon in our Counseling Psychology and Human Services department! Whether you are a new or returning student, are a CFT, prevention science, or counseling psychology student, we are thrilled to have you back on campus and are excited to see the incredible work you will accomplish as future clinicians and researchers.
I also want to recognize that the current events that may unfold in the nation and world as we progress through the term may feel distressing at times. Your program director, program handbook, and Community Canvas sites have provided information on university resources available to support you. In addition, please know that our faculty and staff are also here to support you, not only in your academic and professional pursuits but also in your personal well-being. Whether you need guidance on your research projects, clinical training, or career advice, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Building upon the conversations faculty and graduate students started last spring about the conflict between Israel and Palestine, we are excited to announce the initiation of reading circles. The reading circles are intended to provide a platform for students and faculty to delve deeper into important topics, fostering discussion, reflection, and collaboration. Invitations will be sent out to both students and faculty, and we look forward to your active and voluntary participation. The first reading circle will be led by our faculty and held in association with the HEDCO Clinic. Details are forthcoming soon!
How Will Future Reading Circles Work?
Our hope is that students would propose subsequent content to generate ongoing dialog and exploration. Reading circles can be based on books, podcasts, articles, or any other materials that are relevant to your training and to the current national and global context.
If you have a topic or a set of readings you are passionate about and would like to discuss with your peers and faculty to enrich your training, please add them to the list of readings generated in Spring 2024 and posted in the shared Teams folder here: [Folder icon] Student and Faculty Contributed Resources<https://uoregon.sharepoint.com/:f:/r/sites/O365_CPHSgraduatestudent-facultysharedchannel/Shared%20Documents/General/Student%20and%20Faculty%20Contributed%20Resources?csf=1&web=1&e=HS41TG>. Toward the end of the first reading circle, the next set of reading circles will be proposed, based on the submitted ideas. If funds are needed to provide copies of a non-freely available reading, we have a small pool of funding available.
This year promises to be filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and collaboration. Our faculty and I look forward to co-creating an academic year that is memorable and successful. We look forward to seeing all the amazing things you will achieve in your clinical and research endeavors this year!

The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Today, descendants are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, and they continue to make important contributions in their communities, at UO, and across the land we now refer to as Oregon.
