"Using Systems Science to Improve Prevention: The Case of Community Coalitions and Child Health Inequities"
Childhood obesity is known as a modifiable determinant of many adulthood chronic diseases, including heart disease and most types of cancer. Over the last few decades, community coalitions, consisting of members from organizations that represent multiple sectors (e.g., hospitals, schools, community-based organizations), have proven their ability to reduce and prevent childhood obesity if they use evidence-based strategies. However, coalition adoption of evidence-based strategies remains a well-cited challenge, particularly within communities with socioeconomic disadvantages. In this job talk, Dr. Moore will be presenting his collaborative work with coalitions that aims to address this challenge. Dr. Moore uses a systems science approach to understand the links between coalition social relationships, mobilization efforts, and impact on addressing child health inequities. Focusing on childhood obesity for this presentation, Dr. Moore will explore his use of community-based system dynamics and network simulation with coalitions to support local changes in policies, practices, and environments that support healthy child development. There will be a question and answer session following the presentation and an opportunity to provide your feedback.
This presentation is part of an on-campus interview for the Assistant Professor in Applied Prevention and Health Promotion<https://careers.uoregon.edu/cw/en-us/job/530175> in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services.
