[Prevscilist] Program statement about shooting in Buffalo

Hi PREV community,

This weekend, we learned of yet another act of racist violence against Black people in this country. We cannot begin to understand how each of you are processing this horror. However, we know that it is more exhausting and scary for some of us than others - many in our community spend every day vigilant for signs of attack, deal with regular micro aggressions, and navigate the consequences of inequitable systems intended to care for human beings. As scientists and people, we know that these ongoing experiences with racism harm the heart, mind, and body in very real ways.

Faculty and instructors, please remember that experiencing this vicarious trauma may be affecting our Black students and peers in ways that AEC accommodations and human resources may not cover. Please consider generosity and flexibility with one another, and checking in with the students you mentor closely.

Students, we encourage you to reach out to us, your advisor, or other faculty or fellow students in the program if it would be helpful. There are also resources on campus, if you’d prefer additional or different support:

We are heartbroken, and remain determined to not be desensitized to yet another horrific act of racial violence. Rather, we are recommitting to the work we do to better support our students and colleagues, and contribute to the eradication of race-based trauma and inequities.
