Subject: [Prevscilist] Spring class offering: Latinx mental health

Dear Students,

The spring term class CPSY 608: Topics in Latinx Mental Health will be taught by Dr. Marina Valdez. The class will focus on immigration psychology, feminist/mujerista psychology, trauma, liberation psychology and the destigmatization and decolonization of mental health therapy for Latinx populations.

Dr. Valdez is a graduate of the Counseling Psychology program and engages in clinical practice in Portland, Oregon. Her practice includes conducting immigration and asylum evaluations. Bilingual and bicultural, Dr. Valdez has taught previously in our program (CPSY 626: Psychological Services & Research with Latinx and Spanish Speaking Populations).

CPSY 608 is a requirement for participants in the Spanish Specialization and is offered every spring. This class is an elective for students in prevention science, counseling psychology, school psychology, and couples & family therapy. Content varies year to year (hence the 608/Workshop course designation) and the class may be taken more than once.

If you are interested in the Spanish specialization please review the information provided here https://education.uoregon.edu/cpsy/apply/slpsr

If you are not interested in the Spanish specialization, but are in the CPSY, CFT, or SPSY program and wish to enhance your Spanish clinical vocabulary, contact Dr. Benedict McWhirter (benmcw at uoregon.edu<mailto:benmcw at uoregon.edu>) about enrolling in CPSY 609 Practicum Bilingual Supervision. Supervision is offered fall, winter, and spring terms.

Best,

Ellen McWhirter
