Subject: [Prevscilist] name pronunciation
Dear CPHS community,
I am writing to acknowledge that I have been mispronouncing my name and to share the correct pronunciation. I started introducing myself as "Ateeka" 15 years ago when I started graduate school in the US and people had a hard time pronouncing my name correctly. When I noticed that most people had started calling me "Erica", I decided to go with "Ateeka" - it was easier to say and closer to my actual name than Erica. This NPR interview<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.npr.org/2021/03/12/976385244/why-pronouncing-names-correctly-is-more-than-common-courtesy__;!!C5qS4YX3!WO0ln8FwwI7k3SKDmi3R6Y53nqFh8YiKWD7Ml9G5JG1VyTfgsCJycajmvXJwG9cL-A$> and related article<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/hbr.org/2020/01/if-you-dont-know-how-to-say-someones-name-just-ask__;!!C5qS4YX3!WO0ln8FwwI7k3SKDmi3R6Y53nqFh8YiKWD7Ml9G5JG1VyTfgsCJycajmvXLghW_5LA$> very aptly capture my experiences, and why after so many years I have decided to correct my mistake and say my name the way it is supposed to be said. It will mean extra effort, potentially accompanied by feelings of embarrassment/awkwardness, but I recognize that it is important. The correct pronunciation of my name is "Uh-thick-ah". I will gladly help you with the pronunciation, so don't hesitate to ask if you need to.
Thanks,
Atika (pronounced "Uh-thick-ah")
