Subject: [DNC] Program Manager and Tobacco Treatment Specialist: University of Utah Center for Health Outcomes and Population Equity at the Huntsman Cancer Institute

Due to a significant expansion of our research portfolio, The University of Utah Center for Health Outcomes and Population Equity (Center for HOPE) at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and University of Utah is accepting applications for a Program Manager and a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. The Center for HOPE, led by Dr. David Wetter, conducts community-engaged clinical and implementation science research that focuses on health inequities, behavioral risk factors, cancer screening and vaccination, and use of state of the science biomedical informatics and mobile health technologies for both assessment and intervention. Special populations of interest include Latinos, American Indians/Alaska Natives, African Americans, LGBTQ+, low socioeconomic status, and rural/frontier. Implementation science studies include implementation of evidence-based interventions to increase tobacco cessation treatment engagement, HPV vaccination, and other screening and health risk behaviors, primarily among patients who receive medical care from community health centers. Treatment approaches being investigated by our team include smartphone apps, motivational enhancement therapies, mindfulness meditation, cognitive behavioral interventions, provider reminders, patient reminders, and health care system changes. Assessment approaches include on-body human sensing technologies, ecological momentary assessments, and GPS/GIS. Study designs include Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trials (SMART), Micro-Randomized Trials (MRT), and longitudinal cohorts.

The Program Manager is responsible for assisting the Principal Investigator and team leadership to plan, organize, direct, implement, and manage all aspects of the Center’s research and clinical projects. Master’s degree in psychology, public health, or other relevant social or population sciences is strongly preferred.

The Center also houses the Tobacco Cessation Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute. The Tobacco Cessation Program provides education to HCI patients and their families who are current users of tobacco/nicotine and/or have a recent history of nicotine/tobacco use.

The Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) will serve as a tobacco cessation provider at the Center for HOPE’s Tobacco Cessation Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). The TTS provides education to HCI patients and their families who are current users of tobacco/nicotine and/or have a recent history of nicotine/tobacco use. Job responsibilities will include working collaboratively with patients, their family members and other care providers to develop tobacco cessation treatment plans, identifying patients’ strengths and challenges with regard to quitting, providing cessation treatment, and coordinating and monitoring services accordingly. This position is open to applicants who are either a Registered Nurse or Social Worker.

The University of Utah encompasses both the flagship university and the health sciences campus for the state, competes in the Pac-12 conference, and is the largest institution in the entire Mountain West. Salt Lake City is a diverse and vibrant city with access to world class outdoor recreation and a very affordable cost of living. Salt Lake City is 22% Latino and has the 7th highest proportion of LGBTQ+ residents among U.S. cities.
