The plan, which builds on the progress of our previous planning period, outlines our strategic priorities and describes how our efforts will help shape the landscape of prevention research over the next 5 years.

To better integrate disease prevention into trans-NIH initiatives, we’ve introduced three new cross-cutting themes:

·     Leading causes and risk factors for premature mortality and morbidity
·     Health disparities
·     Dissemination and implementation research.

In addition, we have formally integrated the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program—which has been an important focus of the ODP for several years—as a new strategic priority to reflect the need for continued research to reduce the impact of tobacco on public health.
