Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Prevention Month:
A Call to Action

April is child abuse and sexual assault prevention month. It is a time to review - how are we doing in our collective effort to support families, ensure the safety of all children in our community, and to reduce sexual violence? It is a time to prioritize - what are our most important next steps? And, it is a call to action.

Many individuals and people representing 13 local organizations created a child abuse prevention month website that provides an array of action options any of us can take this month and across this year. I encourage you to scan through the website and to share it widely. The address is: http://getinvolvedlanecounty.org/.

At 'Get Involved' you'll find, for example, illustrations of pinwheel gardens scattered across Lane County, you'll find toolkits, available in English and Spanish, and you'll find a beautiful audio public service announcement created by talented members of our community (also available in English and Spanish). The PSA offers a hopeful and validating message to parents, and encourages all of us to reach out to support parents and child guardians in our lives. You'll find, also, a link to Lane Kids events, volunteer opportunities at United Way, and suggestions for 'Blue Sunday' for members of our faith community - among many additional resources.

Please take some time to review this information. Share it widely.

Many activities are also underway to raise awareness and reduce sexual violence. Take Back the Night, in Eugene, is April 27th, beginning at 6:00 pm at the University of Oregon's EMU.
