Dear PREV students, faculty and staff:
Just a quick update and information for those who are not familiar with CPAN and the 90by30 Initiative. The 90by30 Initiative is an effort to apply systemic and public health ideas toward a significant reduction in a perplexing human rights and social justice issue – child abuse and neglect. Please see the current e-letter to catch a glimpse of how this work is being carried out in Lane County. If you have an interest in more information, including volunteer and research opportunities, please contact me. – Jeff

"I Would Support Child Abuse Prevention IF . . . . "
By: Jeff Todahl, Ph.D
Members of our research team and student supporters recently completed a qualitative analysis of public opinion on child abuse and its solutions. The information was taken from a random digit survey of Lane County and Whatcom County (WA) residents conducted by our Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect. Among all 913 participants in this 52-question survey, 721 chose to take additional time to respond to this open-ended prompt: I would be in full support of a local effort to significantly reduce child abuse and neglect if I was sure that ____. We recorded their responses verbatim.
Participants' responses in both communities were very consistent. Far and away the most common response was some version of "if it would work," "if it were effective," and "if there was evidence of positive results." Many others also emphasized the importance of a feasible plan with follow through, e.g., "if there was a clear plan - real action that is more than a short-term answer" and "if people followed through, if it were actually carried out." Others emphasized the importance of credible leadership of the effort and wide community involvement, such as "if it were grassroots and stayed in the community," "if everybody was on the same page and working together," and "if it reflected common sense community involvement."
Our team - which includes regional leadership team members in each of our seven regions and any other interested parties - will reflect on these insights and give careful attention to their practical application. For me, it's a very important reminder. The vast majority of people in our community will support a concerted effort to reduce child abuse and neglect and to ensure child safety and well-being. That effort, though, is much more likely to enjoy broad public support - and to be effective - when it is locally developed, rooted in feasible and practical solutions in which we can all see a place to contribute, and where responsible leaders ensure thoughtful follow-through over time.
How would you answer this question? Let me or any other member of our team know. To share your thoughts or see a draft of the full report, please contact me at jtodahl at uoregon.edu<mailto:jtodahl at uoregon.edu> or 541-346-0919.
EUGENE TEAM UPDATE
[http://90by30.uoregon.edu/images/articles/sunday.jpg]
Full Steam Ahead in Eugene
The Eugene Regional Leadership Team is picking up speed - the roster currently includes 14 members, who will be focusing this fall on tabling and community surveying throughout the area. Of the 400 surveys the team plans to gather, it has already completed 207. Several local Dari Mart locations have allowed 90by30 to table in front of the stores, and the Whiteaker Community Market also offered a great opportunity to collect surveys. Eugene Sunday Streets on Sept. 25 was a fun event with infectious energy. At the next meeting (Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 5-7 p.m. at the Stellaria Building), members will select co-chairs. These are important leadership positions, as they put the team firmly in the hands of community members. Co-chairs will facilitate team meetings and provide support and direction to members as they work on team objectives. The team is recruiting new members through October, so if you want to be involved with laying the foundation of the 90by30 effort in the metro area, email Urban Outreach Coordinator at brittanyh at 90by30.com<mailto:brittanyh at 90by30.com>.
SPRINGFIELD METRO TEAM UPDATE

Tabling at the Summer Reading Finale at Springfield Public Library
Springfield's Full Fall Schedule
In Springfield, the remainder of September and all of October will be devoted to team recruitment and finishing up the community survey process. All ten of the current team members are community survey-trained - and every single one of them turned up for the second meeting. It was a great way to start the team off! The Springfield Relief Nursery has agreed to host all the team meetings, and outreach to local businesses is in progress. Willamalane Parks and Recreation District, the Springfield-Area Neighborhood Watch, Dari Mart, and Papa's Pizza have all allowed 90by30 to table and collect surveys at their events or stores. 90by30 team members and volunteers will be at Papa's Pizza on two Thursdays, Sept. 29 and Oct. 20, to engage with residents and hand out surveys. On Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., you'll find Springfield members tabling at the Thurston-area Dari Mart.
Outreach efforts continue with an array of meetings with key Springfield officials and residents. Springfield Outreach Coordinator Kayla Watford and 90by30 Co-Founder Jeff Todahl met with Mayor Christine Lundberg to talk about how 90by30's efforts align with the past and current work being done in the Springfield community. Good connections were also made with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, which featured 90by30 in the September edition of its "Bottom Line" newsletter. Check out the spotlight here<http://96bda424cfcc34d9dd1a-0a7f10f87519dba22d2dbc6233a731e5.r41.cf2.rackcdn.com/springfieldchamber/bottom-line/2016/BL-Sep-Final.pdf>.
The next two team meetings are scheduled for Oct. 6 and Oct. 27, both at the Springfield Relief Nursery. Team members have been asked to bring a friend or interested acquaintance to the meeting, so we hope to expand our roster. If you would like to get involved with this fast-moving effort and help lay the foundations of child abuse prevention in the Springfield area, email Kayla Watford at kaylaw at 90by30.com<mailto:kaylaw at 90by30.com> or drop by the Oct. 6 meeting from 5-7 p.m.
WEST LANE TEAM UPDATE
Prevention Planning In Sight
The West Lane RLT has just one more meeting (September 28 at the Siuslaw Elementary School Library from 7-8:30 p.m.) to go before it begins prevention planning. The team is excited to start prevention planning, and is inviting key community members to participate in the process. It is also recruiting for a team co-chair and core members. Email West Lane Regional Coordinator Jesika Kaczenski at jesikak at 90by30.com<mailto:jesikak at 90by30.com> if you are interested.
MCKENZIE RIVER TEAM UPDATE

Team members at a community survey training in Leaburg
McKenzie Hits the Ground Running
The McKenzie team had its inaugural meeting on August 28, with eight enthusiastic team members in attendance. In order to get started as soon as possible, a date was set for a community survey training, and on September 9, Springfield Outreach Coordinator Kayla Watford walked six team members through the process of giving the survey. It was just in time for the Walterville Fair, where team members Jody Brooks and Brent Caulley collected 30 surveys and talked to attendees about 90by30. The response was positive - Brent reported that people were eager to do the surveys, and Jody was pleased that people sought them out to learn more about 90by30's goals and mission. The McKenzie team is excited to bring 90by30 to its community and create a culture that nurtures and supports children and families on the river.
SOUTH LANE TEAM UPDATE
Pushing Forward with Prevention
The South Lane Regional Leadership Team is working fast and furiously on its prevention plan. Members have divided the plan amongst themselves to ensure all segments are fully fleshed out and are checking in with each other to confirm the group's endorsement of the content. The October 24 team meeting will take place in the Creswell area to engage the community in reviewing the prevention plan and solicit its input. Team co-chairs Ana Maria Dudley and Pete Barrell will then lead the team in sharing the plan with South Lane groups for their comments and support. It's a busy time with a lot being accomplished!
NORTH LANE TEAM UPDATE
Outreach in North Lane
The North Lane team has spent the month connecting with community members. On September 1, team member Evelyn Alford and team coordinator Amber Peden visited Goldson Grange in Cheshire to talk about 90by30, answer questions, and collect some of the region's remaining community surveys.
September 10's Veneta Harvest Festival also provided a chance to mingle with neighbors. Amber spent the day handing out coloring sheets with resource information to families while talking to the community about 90by30's North Lane leadership team.
The team has decided to have mini work sessions in the Junction City and Fern Ridge areas to move forward with asset mapping before coming together as a whole group again in October. In the coming month, the team will also hold an open informational meeting for community members at the Fern Ridge library and is looking forward to presenting at a meeting of the area's Grange leaders.
EAST LANE TEAM UPDATE
Leadership in East Lane
The East Lane Regional Team met at the Lowell Fire Department on September 3 to discuss leadership positions. Current chair Brandy Stewart is excited to welcome Kack Camerer as her co-chair. Members also discussed their readings on potential strategies for the region, and made plans for prevention planning meetings. As the team moves into the planning stages, it is looking into creating a presentation from the information gained in its work so far that can be used in the community to create additional interest in the process.

Farewell, Rose!
How did three years go by so fast? It's hard to believe it's time to say goodbye to our very own Rose Wilde. We can't imagine 90by30 without her, but now that the rural regional teams are up and running, she's beginning a new chapter. 90by30 Director Phyllis Barkhurst says, "We would not be where we are not without Rose’s leadership, vision, and compassionate caring for all the people she has worked with in rural Lane County on behalf of 90by30. We send her off with our gratitude and our very best wishes for whatever she chooses to do next." Rose plans to stay involved in the community. "There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that three years of my life have gone toward an effort that will not only continue, but grow," she says. "I have immensely enjoyed the people I have met through 90by30 - my dear colleagues in the office and the inspiring, committed people in small rural communities who, despite already volunteering in multiple service and civic organizations, shared the 90by30 vision and were willing to give more time to manifest it. The real, in-person relationships we formed have lifted me up in times of discouragement. Community organizing is soul work, and mine is richer for it." Our souls - and 90by30 as an organization - are certainly richer for having Rose among us.

90by30 Goes to Washington
90by30 traveled far afield at the beginning of September when Kayla Watford and Brittany Hinchcliffe visited Washington, D.C., for the 20th biennial National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, the only federally sponsored national conference on child maltreatment. This year's conference paved the way in green technology - all conference information and materials were provided on a user-friendly phone app. The conference theme was "Building Community, Building Hope," and the breakout sessions focused on some of the leading research teams and projects from around the country. Look for 90by30 at the 2018 NCCAN - the goal is to attend again, this time as presenters.

. . . And to Calgary!
CPAN co-directors Phyllis Barkhurst and Jeff Todahl traveled to Calgary, Canada, in August to participate as delegates in the International Congress for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (IPSCAN). Forty-two countries participated in over three and a half days of activities. Phyllis was able to present at this international gathering on the work of 90by30 when she filled in during a workshop for a missing presenter. Jeff and Phyllis met with key researchers from around the world, including leaders from the United Nations. Key partnerships were developed with prevention specialists from the U.K., South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa as well as within the United States. It was time well spent, and we owe many thanks to The Ford Family Foundation for sponsoring this trip.

Conference Season Begins
Believe it or not, it's already time to start planning for Conference 2017! We've set the date - May 5, 2017 - and are working to nail down further details. The Conference Committee had an initial meeting on September 14, and we'd love to recruit a few more people, preferably folks interested in helping out with social media, advertising, or materials development. In just one meeting, we've already made some key decisions, including setting a "from theory to action" theme of implementation across the conference. We also plan to examine the cultural aspects of the prevention plan to ensure equity and inclusion. If you or anyone you know would be interested in helping to plan 90by30's signature event, please email Kayla Watford at kaylaw at uoregon.edu<mailto:kaylaw at uoregon.edu>.

Research Update
What's going on at CPAN? The Evaluation Team for the Stewards of Children project will be in Roseburg, Medford, and Bend in late September and early October to conduct English and Spanish focus groups. The groups will add qualitative data to the quantitative information gleaned from the surveys, providing insight into participants' experiences in the Stewards training and any actions they have taken since.

90by30 in the News
With the recent launch of the Springfield Area Regional Leadership Team, it's the perfect time for a feature on 90by30 in the Springfield Chamber of Commerce's "Bottom Line" newsletter. We're excited to be part of the September issue on local nonprofits. Pitching in to Make a Difference
This month's Play Your Part champions posted their pledges on the 90by30 Facebook page.
Stephanie Fisher vowed to present on child maltreatment for a graduate-level developmental psychopathology course at the UO. "Rather than present on this as an academic topic," she says, "we are developing a training for counseling and school psychologists about child abuse and what they can do as practitioners and community members to prevent child abuse and intervene safely!"
Brandy Dawn also promised to play her part in increasing awareness of 90by30 and its efforts on social media. "I have shared this page and information on my page and have asked my friends and followers to like the page and to pledge to play their part. Each one of us needs resources and connection - two major key elements in striving to build a better community."
Thank you, Stephanie and Brandy!
