Hi All,
Here is Elizabeth's abstract:
Random matrix theory is a branch of probability with applications in physics, finance, computer science, biology, and more. This talk will introduce the basic ideas of random matrix theory (linear algebra with a probabilistic twist)! We will look at two important models for random matrices (Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble and Wishart ensemble) and see how they can be applied in physics and in finance.
I will also talk a bit about my journey to becoming a mathematician. It was not a straight line and involved teaching high school for four years before returning to school for my PhD. Since then, I’ve studied math in four countries! I'm happy to discuss my experiences with anyone who is curious about different career paths.
Best regards,
Alena
