It has been hard to get DI implemented in California, but when we have, we have been assisted by provisions of current state law. California's definition of reading instruction is now under attack by supporters of whole language (who switched their materials
to say "comprehensive language" in late July). The test that ensures that incoming teachers know something about the science of reading is also under attack; it would be replaced in 2024 by a video/portfolio approach in which students would show their ability
to design and deliver instruction on narrow topics. Yuk. Until then, students who fail could replace the testing requirement with coursework. Yuk.

Attached are an action alert about how to easily file an individual or group opposition to the bill (the deadline for the next step, Assembly Appropriations, is Friday, August 14). It is at the bottom, but it is the most important thing.

There is also a petition to sign.

Also attached are the current text of the bill; the letters sent by my group, the CA Association for Parent-Child Advocacy, a special education parents', advocates' and lawyers' group; and the shifting disingenuous "research summaries" by supporters of the
bill. "Whole language" was changed to "comprehensive language" in the final version. I am also attaching a draft of my critique of the research; it is being shortened for distribution, but if anyone wants to read what I wrote, it's attached. If anyone wants
access to the underlying articles, I can share them.
