As you know, Direct Instruction (DI) is well known for teaching fundamental
skills associated with early reading as children receiving instruction in
DI gain phonemic awareness and master sound-symbol relationships quickly in
Kindergarten on their way to becoming fluent readers by the end of first
grade.  But DI also focuses on building students’ background knowledge
systematically once they have mastered fundamental decoding skills.  See

Much of the work by my father and colleagues on developing instructional
programs that build students’ background knowledge appears in the Grade 2-5

NIFDI will feature an elementary grade, highly effective, content
knowledge-building program authored by Siegfried “Zig” Engelmann: Academic
Core. In only 20 minutes a day, students learn essential background
knowledge and vocabulary that provide a strong basis for reading
comprehension and success in content-area subjects.

Academic Core comes in four levels. The first three levels are grouped into
units covering:

   - Life Sciences
   - Earth Sciences
   - Physical Sciences
   - Measurement

Level four addresses United States Geography. Each unit contains scripted
lessons with explicit teacher wording, expected student responses, and a
reinforcement system designed to help motivate students to master the
program’s content. Charts, maps, and other displays are included in the
program and are an integral part of instruction using Academic Core. The
program can be used with students in small groups or whole classes…as long
as they read proficiently at the 2nd-grade level or higher.
