di: Algebra tutoring (Brainsarefun - Rory)

In _The Habit of Thought: From Socratic Seminars to Socratic Practice_, Michael Strong makes the point that success in arithmetic is not the best predictor of success in algebra. Algebra requires a kind of thinking different from that required for arithmetic. Algebra requires _conceptual_ thinking: for example, the notion of a variable referring to an abstract number. This conceptual thinking can easily be acquired through computer programming. Alternatively, the variable notion can be taught through analogy with grammar. In particular, the pronoun “she” can refer to any female person, hence a pronoun has a similar function to the variable x.
