Please join me in offering a hearty congratulations to the soon-to-be Dr. Mary Marchetti for the successful defense of her dissertation earlier today!

Mary’s dissertation is titled “Social Anxiety and College Drinking Risk: Exploring the Moderating Effect of Experiential Avoidance,” and it explores the associations between social anxiety and alcohol outcomes (i.e., heavy episodic drinking
and alcohol-related consequences) among young adult college students and the potential moderating effect of experiential avoidance on these associations.

Findings from her dissertation provide evidence that social anxiety can be uniquely related to experiences of
alcohol-related consequences independent of its association with alcohol
consumption and have clear clinical implications for those working in college counseling centers or in other settings where college students receive services.
