Dear CPSY, CFT, and SPSY Students,
If you are interested in participating in the Spanish Specialization (https://education.uoregon.edu/cpsy/slpsr), please note that one of the required courses, CPSY 627 Topics in Latinx Mental Health, will be offered this fall on Thursdays from 1-3:50 pm. This course is only offered every other year.
Description of CPSY 627: The purpose of this course is to enhance understanding and knowledge of Spanish-speaking Latinas/os/x/e in the U.S. Specifically this course focuses on social, historical, political, and cultural contexts that shape and are shaped by the experiences of Latina/o/x/e people in the United States, with particular attention to strengths, assets and resilience as well as conditions of social injustice and inequity, and how such conditions influence the health and well-being of Latinx Spanish-speaking communities. We will explore how class content applies to the work of counseling psychologists, school psychologists, couple and family therapists, and other mental health professionals.
Another required course for the specialization, CPSY 626 Psychological Services with Latinx Populations, was offered last fall and will not be offered again until the fall of 2027 (that is, it is also offered on an every-other-year basis).
Bilingual supervision, also required for the specialization, will be offered Fridays next year from 12-1 pm.
CPSY 627 and CPSY 626 are wonderful electives if you are not interested in the full specialization.
Please review the information at the above link and reach out to me if you are interested in enrolling in the specialization, or if you have any questions about it.
Thank you!
Ellen McWhirter
