The University of Oregon is located on Kalapuya Ilihi, the traditional indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. Today, descendants are citizens of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians of Oregon, and they continue to make important contributions in their communities, at UO, and across the land we now refer to as Oregon.

Subject: Seeking doctoral student participation in research study on impostorism

Dear Director of Clinical Training (DCT),

I hope you are well! This is a follow-up email related to recruitment for my dissertation. My name is Tyler Delaney, and I am a counseling psychology doctoral candidate at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. I am currently working on my dissertation, which seeks to better understand how doctoral students in clinical, counseling, and school psychology experience feelings of impostorism and how those feelings may impact perceptions of one’s own academic persistence during doctoral studies. The research study also explores how anti-racism practices and training opportunities within a doctoral student’s program, along with the strength of their advisor/advisee relationship, may influence one’s feeling of impostorism and academic persistence intentions. I am hoping that, given your role and connection with students, you may be able to assist me with recruiting current doctoral students (including those on pre-doctoral internship) enrolled in your Ph.D./Psy.D./Ed.D. program in clinical/counseling/school psychology.

Participation in the study would involve completing a survey of 57 quantitative items. The survey should take no longer than 20 minutes. It is anticipated that participation will involve minimal risk, and individuals may skip any questions that cause discomfort. If interested, participants can be entered into a raffle to win a one in five chance of receiving a $20 Amazon gift card.

If you have any questions about this research, please feel free to contact me, Tyler Delaney, at tyler.delaney001 at umb.edu<mailto:tyler.delaney001 at umb.edu>. I am being advised by Dr. Tim Poynton and have been approved by the UMass Boston Institutional Review Board. Individuals interested in participating can access the survey through the link here: Dissertation Survey<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/umassboston.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bPnbkc0RZASWqJo__;!!C5qS4YX3!B8oKX0eRP6vEOACRlpQN3HY2ve9M4E2lhCXtIhe26H1oM75mp1AoIPuVMvUvPkhhMAuZJz2884gD8he3PvZixr862bjXbg$>

I gathered DCT contact information from APPIC’s website, as well as some individual program websites over the last few months. While I tried to be meticulous, I acknowledge that my list may not be completely up-to-date. If you are not the current Director of Clinical Training (DCT) for your program, I apologize for any inconvenience and hope that you can assist me by forwarding this e-mail to the current DCT. Again, I would greatly appreciate any effort to forward this message to current doctoral students (in any year of the program) who may be interested.

Lastly, to measure survey response rates, I am hoping that, as the current DCT, you might be able to complete a quick form that asks: the institution, degree type, and discipline you represent (i.e., Ph.D. in counseling psychology at UMass Boston), as well as the number of doctoral students who are actively enrolled in your program. Here is the link: Doctoral Program Information<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/umassboston.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eQd7bTCAq2mXrkG__;!!C5qS4YX3!B8oKX0eRP6vEOACRlpQN3HY2ve9M4E2lhCXtIhe26H1oM75mp1AoIPuVMvUvPkhhMAuZJz2884gD8he3PvZixr9IUP8o_g$>

If you are interested, I would be happy to provide you with a summary of aggregate data from my findings. Thank you for your consideration and support of my dissertation research!

Warm regards,

Tyler

I acknowledge that University of Massachusetts, Boston is situated upon the traditional, ancestral, and unceded land of the Pawtucket and Massachusett First Nations. I respect the elders, both past and present, as well as future generations. This acknowledgment demonstrates my commitment to working to dismantle the systems of oppression that have displaced Indigenous Peoples and the ongoing legacies of settler colonialism.
