Hi CPSY Community,
Please join me in offering a hearty congratulations to the soon-to-be Dr. Matt Jones for the successful defense of his dissertation earlier today!
Matt's dissertation is titled "Race and Ethnicity as a Moderator of the Association between Stereotype Threat and Alcohol Use," and it explores the associations between anticipated stereotype threat and alcohol outcomes (i.e., total drinks per week and alcohol-related consequences) among first-time, first-year U.S. resident college students and the potential moderating effect of racial and ethnic identity on these associations.
Findings from his dissertation build on his SAP, which used an identity and stereotype nonspecific measure of stereotype threat administered pre-matriculation as a predictor of student retention into their second year. Matt's dissertation found a positive association between students' ratings of "anticipated" stereotype threat pre-matriculation and their ratings provided after having been on campus at least two terms. While no statistically significant associations were found between anticipated stereotype threat and the specific alcohol outcomes Matt investigated, Matt's study is only the second to explore any associations between stereotype threat and alcohol outcomes. Through his synthesis of the literature and discussion, Matt highlights potential future directions for research on mechanisms of differential burden of alcohol consequences across student subpopulations.
Congratulations, Matt!!!
