Hi all,

I just want to “ditto” on everything Wyatt shared, although I’ll note that Wyatt’s experience is likely to be more representative of the extern experience than mine. I was there as a practicum student when OSU CAPS was still a site for our adult prac. During my time there, I noticed that externs generally had similar responsibilities, but got up and running more quickly than practicum students and probably saw more complex cases. We were also transitioning into the covid chapter of our lives just prior to spring term, so one-third of my practicum happened when telehealth was not a thing and then instantly became a thing. Either way, I found it to be a very valuable experience, I loved the range of client concerns I got to work with, and I’m happy to connect with anyone that has questions, as well!

Hi all,

I am currently externing at OSU CAPS and would be happy to talk with anyone interested in the site.

For those with some interest in the site but little interest in scheduling another meeting with someone, my brief summary of the experience is:

- Pros: Great training with a developmental focus. I’ve found my supervisors to be very attentive to my individual training goals. I’ve worked with a diverse range of clients with a variety of presenting problems. There are opportunities for individual and group counseling as well as triage, single session appointments, and outreach. I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a clinician through the experiences and supervision at this site, especially as it pertains to integrating non-CBT theoretical understandings and interventions into my (typically CBT-focused) work.

- Cons: Driving up to Corvallis is tiring and expensive when compared to all of our local externship options. OSU CAPS (similar to UO UCS) limits extern/practicum student cases to what they consider low-acuity. My experience is that it is impossible to actually filter out all high acuity clients from my caseload, but this can be frustrating for those of us looking to gain experience with trauma-treatment, suicidality, and other presenting problems.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Take care,
Wyatt
