Happy new year, everyone!

I hope you are all enjoying your time off! Although we are still on winter break, CPSY admissions occurs early in winter term and faculty wanted to share some information before the start of classes. Faculty reviewed nearly 150 applications in the month of December and we selected 28 applicants to join us for interview day this year. It is always exciting to read students’ applications and envision the contributions that they will make to the field of counseling psychology in the coming years. And yet, it is also very difficult to select just a fraction of them to interview.

As you probably remember from your own interview day, current CPSY students are an essential part of the day’s events and we are hoping you will volunteer some time on interview day, which will take place on Friday, January 27th. Based on what we’ve learned from conducting interviews remotely over the past couple of years and discussions among CPSY faculty, we are now including time for a brief welcome at the beginning of the day and the option for interviewees to meet in open sessions with interviewing faculty members at the end of the day. There is also a small change to the Coffee Talk and Research Presentation sessions. As applicants are often interested in what the first couple of years of the program will be like and learning about life in Eugene, so we thought it would be most useful for them to hear from current 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year students during the Coffee Talk sessions. As in previous years, 2-3 CPSY students will meet with a group of about 5 interviewees at a time to field their questions (via Zoom) and these Coffee Talk sessions will be scheduled in 1-hour blocks of time. We’re hoping to have 10-12 1st thru 3rd year CPSY student volunteers that can co-lead 1 or 2 hour-long coffee talks on 1/27. For the research presentations, faculty members who are not on sabbatical have already reached out to some of our 4th- and 5th-year students about presenting their SAP papers, dissertation research, or other research they’re working on, so thank you to the students that have already volunteered to co-lead those sessions!

Based on what we’ve learned over the past couple of years, the remote interview format is likely to be the new normal among graduate programs like ours and can support a more financially feasible process for applicants. Naturally, there are many important aspects of the in-person process that can’t be replicated remotely, but we are hoping to communicate as much of the full CPSY experience as possible through the remote format. Lue will be working with Danette and Kristen to help coordinate scheduling, so please be on the look-out for a follow up email with a sign-up sheet and additional details. I know how busy you all are, especially at this time of the year, so please know that the time you give to help with this process is deeply appreciated and we couldn’t do it without you! Enjoy the rest of the winter break and good luck with the start of the term next week.

Leslie
