Dear CPSY Graduate Students and Faculty,
Thank you, once again, for your participation in last Friday’s facilitation. The goal of the session was to brainstorm and discuss ideas/solutions related to the concerns shared by graduate students in the spring. There were many ideas put forward and discussed, and many solid action steps were developed.
Meeting Notes
Attached are the meeting notes prepared by the ombuds program. Please note that these are not meant to capture the entirety of the conversation (like meeting minutes) but instead are intended to track the suggestions by faculty and students, and document the proposed action steps for follow-up.
Future Collaboration/Discussion
Since one facilitated session can’t serve to generate solutions and solid action steps for all the concerns raised, this will be an ongoing program effort. At this point in the process, we expect that most of this work can be done by the program as you integrate planning for action steps and further discussions into regular meetings. The ombuds program is always happy to participate if a facilitator is needed.
Concerns Not Fully Discussed
Similarly, not all concerns were able to be discussed in the session in depth. We know that some want more conversation, specifically around issues of discrimination, microaggressions, identity, representation, and wellness. As we shared in the session, informal solutions-oriented brainstorming sessions aren’t the best forum for these discussions (due to confidentiality needs of concerns, the relationship between formal requirements for responses and informal discussion, and for reasons of creating the appropriate space for such discussions). The ombuds office will work with graduate students on topics that students feel need additional discussion/action and our office can be available to students with additional specific concerns in these areas.
Next Steps
As referenced above, next steps for the CPSY program include carrying out the action steps discussed in last Friday’s meeting and where needed, discussing and continued planning on specific topics. This will be done via an integrated approach (integrating this work to ongoing meetings and program efforts). Next steps for the ombuds program include working with graduate students on topics that students feel need additional discussion/action. The ombuds program will schedule a follow up meeting with students to take place in the next few weeks.
As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or comments.
Best wishes,
Brett
